Advisory Body Announced for the .Charity Top-Level Domain

June 2013 – Spring Registry Limited, which is pursuing the .Charity top-level domain (new gTLD) has announced the creation of the .Charity Governance Council. For the next several months, philanthropists, corporate representatives, and others interested in being involved in the Internet’s leading charity domain will be able to sign up to participate in the .Charity Governance Council.

“Other Governance Councils have been previously announced (in the health and sports industries), but the .Charity Governance Council is the first that specifically targets a non-profit market,” declares Charles Melvin. Its creation is an attempt, in the midst of the application process overseen by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), to engage stakeholders at charities.  Governance Council participants will be invited to contribute to best practices for the .Charity gTLD, including Abuse Prevention and Mitigation (APM) Seal reporting system, intellectual property rights protection, gTLD rules, reserved second-level domain names, certification or authentication programmes, and ensuring compliance with ICANN rules.

Iain Roache of Spring Registry Limited emphasised the important role that participants in the charity industry will play. “We expect the .Charity domain to become the Internet destination for charities around the world.  To ensure that we reflect the values and mission of key stakeholders throughout the globe, we are asking interested parties to donate their expertise to the .Charity Governance Council.”

.Charity Governance Council participants may include charities themselves, individual philanthropists, representatives of corporate giving programs, and more. The objective is to include all key players in the charity market. Interested parties are encouraged to visit www.governancecouncils.com/charity to decide if participating in the Governance Council is right for them.

Spring Registry Limited representatives explained that expressions of interest would be accepted at this site for several months, with ongoing communications sent to interested parties prior to the Governance Council launch.  Officials also noted that ongoing Governance Council activity is subject to award of the .Charity gTLD by ICANN.
